La Verne Figueira Rapoza, 67, of Hilo died Feb. 26 at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker, retired retail store manager, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a graduate of St. Joseph High School. Nancy Mitsue Kitajima, 103, of Hilo died Feb. 26 at the Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, she was a member of the Hilo Meishoin and Hilo Meisho Fujinkai. She began taking Chanoyu (Tea Ceremony) classes in 1971, which was also the beginning of the “Way of Tea” in Hilo. She was recognized as a Cultural Treasure by the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii for her contribution in perpetuating the Japanese culture of Chado. She was actively involved with various activities such as the Taishoji Haiku Club, teaching flower arrangement and Japanese language school. Private funeral services were held at the Hilo Meishoin Mission. Survived by daughters, Sumie Kitajima-Ogata and husband Earl Ogata of Hilo and Grace Kitajima of Colorado; son, Stanley Kitajima of Honolulu; daughters-in-law, Mae Kitajima of California and Jean Kitajima of California; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Ann Marie Ferguson, 92, of Kapaau died Feb. 23 at her residence. Born in Lahaina, Maui, she was a retired waitress for Club Rodale and Molina’s Bar in Wailuku, Maui. She was also a Haiku School bus driver. A celebration of life will be held at noon March 16 at the Makapala family residence, located at 52-191 Makapala Road in Kapaau.
